Contestshipping - Garden of Dreaming

Description

The rose watches the butterfly, wishing to be free of its roots. The butterfly admires the rose, desiring its grace.

So they meet. The rose provides support. The butterfly brings movement. Silky petals give way beneath light feet as they kiss tenderly, fleetingly, startlingly.

Drew dreams of roses and butterflies. May kisses him in the garden - but perhaps that is a dream, too.

My entry for the #DrawAnime contest and, once it's been placed in a Draw This Again meme, my entry for dA's Draw This Again contest.

Please check out the meme version too:

This idea's been in the works for at least three years: May meeting Drew, the butterfly meeting the rose. It always seemed perfect to me because in the Pokemon anime, Drew's signature Pokemon is Roselia (later Roserade) and May's signature Pokemon is Beautifly. Drew conveniently carries roses with him at all times the same way a Roselia carries roses in its hands. He's calm and collected for the most part, while May is energetic and spontaneous. It fits perfectly, and being a massive Contestshipper forever, I couldn't resist. The original sketch, however, didn't do the concept justice, and so it languished in the dark recesses of my brain - withering, if you will. My mom blocked deviantART on our home network, too, forcing me to go on hiatus for more than a year.

Then this summer I looked through my old sketches and rediscovered my old sketch. Out of boredom, I redesigned May's dress, thinking that perhaps in the far future I would continue the project. I tried to design a matching outfit for Drew as well, though the results were unsatisfactory. Meanwhile, I was becoming more active on deviantART again, coming out of hiatus and starting to paint digitally. People responded positively, encouraging me to continue. I created a finalized version of May's Beautifly dress and painted Passion, re-igniting my love for the pairing while also allowing me to brush up on my painting techniques. Still, I wasn't sure I would have the motivation or time to finish what I was calling "In the Garden," since college would be starting soon. The dream seemed far from being realized.

But the Draw this Again contest came around, and I knew that it would work, because contests are one of my top motivators. Even if I didn't win anything, even if I finished it late, I knew I would finish it eventually. My vision would come to life instead of forever haunting development hell. With a new composition in mind, I set to work on "Garden of Dreaming."

Well, here it is. Sorry for the block of text; I wrote it mostly for myself. xD I'm sure most of you will be like tl;dr.

I think May's dress, like near the breast area, it's a little shifted back. Maybe it's because of the shading that it makes it look like it's higher than it should be, or it could be just me. And Drew's nose look a little high...or his whole face could be a little high, since the eyes are halfway from the top of the head to the chin, the nose halfway from the eyes to the chin, and the lower lip halfway from the nose to the chin. Or like I said before, it could be just me.
Great job on the coloring though. The background is blurred so it brings a focus to the characters.
